On April 1st, the Black Alliance for Just Immigration turned 20.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of organizing, storytelling, and building power at the intersection of Black liberation and immigrant justice. Twenty years of being your plug.
And if you’ve been with us for any part of that — you already know: none of this happened by accident.
When BAJI started, we were asking questions a lot of folks weren’t ready to answer.
Like: where are Black immigrants in this conversation? And why are our experiences so often left out of the broader fight for justice?
For the last two decades, we’ve been answering those questions through our work.
We’ve pushed at every level — from city halls to Congress to the UN — to make sure Black migrants aren’t invisible in policy or politics. We’ve told the stories others wouldn’t. Lifted up the voices of Black migrants navigating systems that were never built for us and helped shift how people understand immigration in this country. We’ve invested in political education and narrative change, because we know you can’t talk about immigration without talking about anti-Blackness. We’ve built power alongside Black diasporic leaders on the ground, rooted in community and accountable to our people. And we’ve produced research that helped define the field — from The State of Black Immigrants to groundbreaking work on gender justice, surveillance, and criminalization.
That’s 20 years of being consistent, focused, and unapologetic.
But we’re not marking this milestone just to look back. We’re marking it because of what this moment requires of us now.
Because the truth is: the conditions we’ve been organizing against haven’t gone away. In a lot of ways, they’ve gotten worse.
And meeting this moment takes more than urgency — it takes infrastructure, strategy, and real resources.
That’s what we’ve been building. And now, we need to scale it.
From the streets to the courts, we are fighting on every front — organizing our communities while also wielding the law as both shield and sword in the legal battlefields that shape our people’s lives.
So I’m asking you, directly: if you believe in this work; if you believe Black migrants deserve to be seen, protected, and organized, will you invest in what comes next? As part of our “20 at 20” campaign, we’re asking folks to give what they can:
